It is crucial to understand who are you - the real you or what is your “True Self?”
We all feel and know deep in our heart what is our nature but that knowledge is obscured by what society teaches us.
It is time to go back to your roots as far as you can unveil them.
I will attempt do so according to what I see clearly by sheer common sense and logic backed up by intuition.
Who is that, real you and where are you?

Let’s suppose there is a super-advanced medical equipment allowing to sustain a human life in all kinds of accidents.
There are thousands of patients.
Each has some part of his/her body missing in an accident.
One is missing an arm, another – a leg, a third – a liver, a next one – lungs, next – a heart, and so on.
We know that each person would still exist.
So the person’s self can’t be in any of the limbs or organs. 
Ok, let’s proceed with our experiment.
We are getting up and go to another, medical department of that super-hospital of the future. There are patients there also but whose certain, small part of a brain is removed by a super-precise surgery.
All are missing some part of a brain.
We already have some, similar surgeries in our times.
We, also, know such patients would live as long as the area removed is small enough. We discover, again, that his/her self is not in any of those brain parts as well.
If we get enough of thousands of patients, where each part of a brain you can think of is cut off as a minute portion so that the sum of all those parts comprises the whole brain, we would, still, get the same result.
A person’s self is not in any of those parts.
If that is nowhere in a brain and not in a body,
a common sense tells us that a self can’t be, then, identified anywhere on the body-brain. It must be somewhere else. We have covered any, possible combination and it’s not there. We really did.
Then it means one thing. A self can not be identified on any part of the physical structure of a human or even an animal since the same experiment could be run on them too.
Great, so where is it, we, still, want to know?
That means that there has to be, just has to be, some other, part or parts of a human, where that self is. Yet, be assured that is not in the physical body-brain.
I want you to have a clear understanding of what we have just gone through. Never accept anything without understanding.
Examining every part of a human even as far as cell by cell would, still, not isolate a human self. Make sure you comprehend that and run that experiment in your head again if needed.

Yet, a Self exists and you know and feel it.

We must come to a conclusion that our Self uses our body-brain to express itself but the former is not the latter.
You live in your house or apartment but you are not that house or apartment.
So where is the self?

It must be somewhere. Of course must be and is.

Let’s go step by step.

Since a Self is using a physical frame, the Self must have means of projecting itself onto the latter.
When you watch a movie in a movie theater, pay attention where that movie is coming from?

It is projected on the screen in front of you from some device behind and above you coming off it as beams of light.
A similar situation is with you and your self. Your self is, also, projected onto your frame as some substance on a screen.
Projection – an interesting word. What it means, the way I see it, is thrusting of images comprised of light onto some surface.

You don’t see separate components of light but you can see it as a whole. Notice, all I do is, simply, follow an example from real life, dwelling on that step by step using a comparison or analogy.

So let’s dwell some further.
A theater screen must be clean and without defects to be able to gather the transmitted movie (light) and show us the projection.

If the screen were dirty, it would not reflect the movie-light accurately. Or any distortions on the screen would alter the images projected. What do we learn from that? Exactly what it implies.

A screen or our physical frame must be clean and undistorted, non-deformed from some perfect screen or frame (our goal) so that the projection can be projected accurately and originally. Anything else implies distortions.

So cleanness, purity, non-distortion must be essential qualities for a projection to be projected accurately.

The level of distortions would be precisely proportionate to the level of the screen-frame being polluted, dirty or distorted.

Know right away that keeping your body-brain as pure and clean and undistorted as possible to perfection would cause the projection of the movie or Self to be original and proper.

I am running both examples parallel: movie and self-projection.

We are going deeper and deeper now. Truth would uncover itself when efforts are made to find the core of it.

A self, seems to be so far, is some, non-typically-physical substance that exists in reality but which we can’t see or touch. 
It is a projection onto our physical body-mind but it is not confined to one, specific area of us but, rather, projected onto us somewhere as some, unique combination of the untouchable substance that makes that combination unique and can give an identity to that, specific Self.

That is my, personal, general understanding and perception of a “self.”

I encourage you to come to your, own clear understanding of it.

We may come to the same or different concept; yet, what counts is the search for truth and I encourage it.

I write what I don’t doubt anymore. Doubts and guesses would be classified as such.

The logic tells me that since a Self is projected onto our physical layers, the former can’t be originating from the same physical layers so its nature must be different. It can’t be typically physical or regular matter.
It must be of some other nature. If it were typically physical, we would have been able to isolate and identify it. We know we can’t.
 Since we have applied the physical method in attempts to find it part by part, cell by cell and have failed, we must use non-typical-physical methods.

Deny the existence of anything outside the typical physical matter all you want but, by logic, something else, then, must be applied in the case of Self since the ordinary, physical methods yield zero.

Let’s not go too far and, simply repeat concepts of soul, spirit, non-material, etc. My goal is not to accept prevailing beliefs but to come to conclusions because we discover them by logic, common sense, intuition but the combination must be there and clear.
I advocate a personal discovery or verification and not blind acceptation of beliefs.

At this stage, logic tells me that a Self exists, it is real but the ordinary, physical methods do not allow us to see or feel it; thus, such methods may not be applied to it.

Ok, I, still, don’t want to go in the depth out of this world and use the super-natural explanation instead of logical concepts. 
I say Self is, then, some physical substance - not typical but highly refined so we, also, need the highly refined methods to discover it.

Highly refined, thin, transparent are terms that jump to my mind.

Yet, I am still using the terms “physical” – just a higher grade of it.
